Climate Change & Migration

Geneva
Migration and Climate Change
Refugees India 2006

In the context of a changing climate and the human impacts of this, QUNO’s work on Migration & Climate Change is seeking ways to ensure protection of people who are affected by migration or displacement due to the effects of climate change. To this end, QUNO is undertaking a range of activities to raise awareness of the issues, identify solutions and support those implementing improvements. These include:

  • examining how existing standards and practices can be used in this context, including how international displacement and migration rules can be adapted to cover those currently left exposed.
  • seeking personal accounts and narratives of those displaced for environmental reasons, so that responses can be better tailored to the reality of people’s lives.
  • working with faith communities to strengthen their response to migration and help ensure it is as positive an experience as possible for all involved: the migrants themselves and the communities of origin, transit and destination.
  • exploring the connections between climate change and conflict, in collaboration with QUNO’s Peace & Disarmament programme.
