“Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where the people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free.”
---Dalai Lama, 1989

The escalating cycle of violence in Israel and Palestine is of grave concern to QUNO as we work to promote respect for human rights, international law, and nonviolent alternatives to conflict. We have observed an increasing disconnect between peaceful initiatives created by civil society on the ground and action at the Israeli government and Palestinian Authority policy levels. The current paralysis in governmental negotiations is affecting progress at the United Nations, where stalemates on this issue are at an all time high in the UN Security Council and within the mediating Middle East Quartet. QUNO is particularly concerned by the rapid de-development and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

QUNO’s Israel-Palestine Programme aims to promote the engagement of the UN and the role of International Law in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict, by:

  • facilitating communication from civil society to the United Nations system through disseminating information to our Quaker constituency and related civil society about the UN’s work on Israel-Palestine.
  • engaging in advocacy efforts at the UN in conjunction with other NGOs and UN agencies.
