The northern Ugandan conflict, which has destabilized northern Uganda, southern Sudan and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, was ignored by the international community for much for the 20 year conflict history creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Since parties to this protracted conflict are now at the negotiating table, QUNO’s ECC program is working to ensure that the United Nations community is a catalyst to ending the long war. QUNO is also working with UN partners to improve humanitarian coordination in the region. In addition, QUNO calls for the continuation of international support as the parties establish effective justice and reconciliation mechanisms that will help establish a sustainable peace. Specifically, QUNO’s ECC program works by:

(1) assisting the international community in its coordination of policy based on the following principles:

  • support for and assistance to the nonviolent resolution of the conflict in Northern Uganda must be a priority for the UN and the international community
  • a greater effort must be made to end the humanitarian crisis, which has had devastating affects on the people of Northern Uganda, especially women and children

(2) supporting and highlighting the work of Quaker partners and local initiatives in Northern Uganda.

(3) engaging in coalition building with relevant stakeholders, including UN member states, UN agencies, international non-governmental organizations and Ugandan civil society.
